Essays

On this page, please find essays on a variety of topics, primarily social justice, LGBT history and culture, and theological and ecclesiastical issues.

The first attachment below is a PDF scan of my 1992 book chapter, "Sexual Dissidents and the National Security State, 1942-1992," from the book I co-edited with Patricia Myers for the American Friends Service Committee Great Lakes Region, entitled
A Certain Terror: Heterosexism, Militarism, Violence and Change. (For full citation, see my Resume.) It is an overview of LGBT organizing beginning in World War II and ending just before the election of Bill Clinton to his first term as president of the United States. In it I try to elucidate how LGBT movements were influenced by the waxing and waning of U.S. national security policy.

I apologize for the quality of the scan. Despite the ugly gutter, I think all the text is legible--it does get better after the first page. I will try to rescan as I have time.
